Freedom Avenue
Avenida Liberdade, 2715-311 Lisboa, Portugal
Description:
Liberty Avenue is one of the most famous streets in the Portuguese capital. The predecessor of the future elite boulevard was the so-called "public bridge", laid after the devastating Lisbon earthquake. In 1879-1886, it was decided to build a new street that would look like the famous Paris boulevards. The creation of a new urban artery marked a new stage in the development of the city and the development of new areas in the north of the urban area.
Initially, the green boulevard, despite its democratic name, was surrounded by walls and was intended exclusively for a select circle of residents, the construction of elite houses began. But with the Liberals coming to power in 1821, the street was opened to a wide range of citizens. Since the XIX century, there are still numerous monuments of history and architecture, pedestrian sidewalks, statues of famous personalities, a monument to the heroes of the First World War.
In the XX-XXI centuries, life on Liberty Avenue continues to beat the key - elite mansions, hotels, respectable restaurants, shops and boutiques of world-famous brands are located here, parades and other solemn events are held.
