Se Cathedral
Largo da S, 1100 Lisboa, Portugal
Description:
Maria Mayor de Lisboa, or Cathedral Se, is the central cathedral of Lisbon. It is the oldest church in the city, also built on the foundation of the mosque. Construction began in 1147, and during this time the building changed many times and survived several earthquakes. Now the cathedral is an example of a combination of several architectural styles.
In 1448, Queen Leonor founded the Lisbon House of Mercy at the cathedral, and the influence of this charitable institution spread throughout the country, including its colonies. It continues its work these days.
Archaeological research has recently been carried out in the central courtyard of the cathedral, during which evidence of Roman, Arab and medieval eras has been found. And in June, the cathedral becomes the center of the holiday in honor of St. Antonio, which is celebrated annually.
