Museum of Music

Rua Joao de Freitas Branco 12, Lisboa, Portugal

About the company:

The Museum of Music, located in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, is a unique museum thanks to some of the artifacts from its collection. Its history began in 1911, when musicologist Michelangelo Lambertini and collector Antonio Carvalho Monteiro began collecting musical instruments, scores and iconography samples from various city organizations. Initially, the collection was located in a building, on Rua Street to Alekrim.

After the death of the creators of the unique collection, the curator of the museum Thomas Borba continued their work. The museum has moved several times, and since 1994 it has been underground – on two specially equipped floors of the west wing of the Alto Dos metro station.

The collection of musical instruments, among which you can see the famous piano of the composer Ferenc Liszt, the cello of Antonio Stradivari and one of the two oboes of Eichentopf of the XVIII century preserved in the world, has more than a thousand instruments of the XVI-XX centuries. Also in the museum there is an extensive library of 9 thousand works, unique handwritten documents, ceramic products, sculptures, photographs, engravings and paintings.
