Museum of Roman Theatre

Patio do Aljube 5, Lisbon, Portugal

About the company:

The Museum of the Roman Theatre, located in the southernmost part of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, is a unique museum complex that includes buildings of different centuries. It was opened in 2001 to preserve the memory of the city’s Roman past. The museum space includes a four-storey building of the XVII century and the remains of Roman buildings. Entrance to the museum, part of which is located in the open air, is free.

In the main building of the museum there is a permanent exhibition, which introduces visitors to the history of the city of Roman times and the history of the development of the Roman theater. Among the exhibits of the museum you can see the architectural elements of Roman buildings found during the excavations: capitals, entablatures, as well as documents and photographs. Near the museum are the ruins of the Roman theater, built in the first century by the emperors Augustus. From the once huge amphitheater, designed for 5 thousand spectators, only columns and several stone sculptures have survived.
