Chiadou Museum
Rua Serpa Pinto 4, Lisboa, Portugal
About the company:
The Chiado Museum, located in the eponymous district of the Portuguese capital - Lisbon, has a second name - the National Gallery of Modern Art. It was founded in 1911 by a government decree and occupies the building of a former Franciscan monastery that suffered during the earthquake of 1755.
The house, which was empty for a long time, decided to restore and create a gallery in it. In 1988, a fire broke out in the area of Shiado, which completely destroyed many buildings, including the Chiado Museum. The restored museum reopened its doors in 1994.
The permanent expositions of the museum acquaint visitors with the Portuguese art of the XIX-XX centuries. Among the exhibits you can see works of painting and sculpture from romanticism to modernism. At temporary exhibitions, which are held in a separate hall, works of artists from all over the world are exhibited. A special attraction of the museum collection is the self-portrait of Columban Bardal Pinheiro, who headed the museum from 1914 to 1927, and diptychs, in the style of art deco, Almada Negreyros - Portuguese modernist. In 1996, the Chiado Museum received the prestigious award of the European Museum Festival, for its contribution to the development of museum business.
