The Rossio Railway Station Building
Description:
The building of the Rossio railway station, built in the late 19th century, tourists in appearance are often confused with the building of the opera or theater. In fact, the station is so beautiful that you would think it was a small palace.
The station was opened in 1890 and is considered the highest achievement of Portuguese engineering of that century. It was designed by the architect José Luis Monteirustol. It is a three-storey building, made in the neo-Manueline style, which gives it a special romantic look.
The double entrance to the station is decorated with arches in the form of horseshoes made in the Moorish style, between which a sculpture of a knight flaunts. In the center of the facade, the roof, decorated with an openwork balustrade, is decorated with a small clock tower. In addition, in the decoration of the station you can see thin buttresses, tiled inserts and other decorative elements.
