Excursion to Guimarais by train
Description:
We depart from St. Bento Station on the local train to Guimarais. Time is about 1 hour. Arriving in Guimarais, we go to the historical center, which is a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. The narrow streets of old Guimarães, as many centuries ago, are paved with cobblestones.
Heading to the old castle of Guimarais with seven towers on the "Holy Hill", where the first king of the country - Afonso Henriques I - was born, we will see the church of St. Miguel.
We will see the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza XV century. If desired, you can visit for an additional half. fee. Stroll along the oldest street of Guimarais - St. Mary's street (Santa Maria), where there is a cafe with traditional sweets.
Passing through St. James Square, we head to the Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Monastery, which now houses a museum of historical values. The monastery is named after an olive tree planted in 672 by the Visigoth king Wamba. The oil from his fruit went to the altar. After it began to dry, a cross was hung on it, and since then it has been constantly green. The tree that grows in front of the Padrao do Salado was planted in 1985.
You can take photos near the fortress, where it is written “Here was born Portugal”.
