Porto Cathedral
Terreiro da S, 4050-573 Porto, Portugal
Description:
It is believed that the Cathedral was once the center of the city, around which the whole of Porto was built. Whether it is true or not, the cathedral, located on a high hill and visible from almost anywhere in the city, is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist spots in Porto.
The cathedral was built in the XII-XIII centuries. Its appearance is severe and impregnable, because it was rebuilt from an old fortress, as the thick jagged walls speak eloquently. This was due to the need to defend against the Moors, in whose hands at that time was the south of Portugal. The church continued to be completed until the XIX century, so the entire cathedral complex is an intriguing combination of a variety of architectural styles.
Be sure to see the unique silver altar, the construction of which took 800 kilograms of silver – in 1809 it was saved from the French, quickly walled up the altar niche. Attention deserves and patio, lined with the famous Portuguese tiles "azulejo".
Every year in June, the cathedral becomes the center of attention during the traditional celebrations in honor of St. Antonio. These days, millions of sardines are eaten here, and the whole county is filled with exuberant fun.
