Cais da Ribeira embankment

north coast of the Douro River near the Luisa I Bridge

Description:

Cais da Ribeira is an amazing promenade, located on the northern bank of the Douro River.

As befits the old quarter, the embankment consists of a whole gallery of steep streets and alleys, courtyards and coffee terraces. The quarter remains residential, but still today Cais da Ribeira is a kind of open-air museum. Here you can see the remains of the fortress wall that once defended the Porto from invaders. The facades of the houses are lined with the famous colored Portuguese azulejo tiles, which makes it seem that the walls are covered with multicolored stone scales. One of the attractions is also the grandiose bridge of Louis I – the creation of one of the students of Gustave Eiffel.

At the seafront are moored small ancient ships. Once they transported port wine, and today these ships are used for river tourist trips. And in the evenings, Cais da Ribeira is filled with lovers of nightlife. There are many bars, cafes and restaurants where you can try the famous Portuguese fish, seafood and drink the strongest fragrant coffee.
