River Duero
it originates in Spain, northwest of the city of Soria, reaches the Atlantic in Portugal.
Description:
The Duero River is one of the largest rivers of the Iberian Peninsula. It originates in Spain, northwest of the city of Soria, in the Iberian mountains and, having made a journey about 900 kilometers through the Castile plateau, reaches the Atlantic in Portugal.
Duero flows through one of the recognized wine regions of Spain - Ribera del Duero, where excellent wines from red grapes of the variety tempranillo are produced. The river passes through the city of Zamora, then descends from the Northcastile plateau and flows into one of Europe’s most impressive canyons, 200-500 meters deep and 112 kilometers long, which forms part of the state border between Spain and Portugal. It is currently a protected international nature park.
In Portugal, this river is known as the Douro. Here is the wine region of Altu Doru, included in 2001 in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The local microclimate allows you to grow olives, almonds and special grapes, from which the famous port wine is made. The center of production of the best port wine is considered to be the valleys near the cities of Peso da Regua and San Juan da Pesqueira. The best wine has been stored in local cellars for over 80 years.
A few kilometers from the mouth of the river is the city of Porto, the second largest in Portugal and one of the westernmost cities in Europe.
