Sao Bento Railway Station

Description:

Sao Bento is not just a railway station, but one of the most beautiful stations in the world, included in the rating of the best stations of all continents according to the American magazine Travel + Leisure.

The city railway station got its name from the old Benedictine monastery of Sao Bento di Ave Maria, on the site of which it was built and inaugurated in 1916. However, this was preceded by painstaking work on finishing the station with the famous ceramic tiles azulejo. No wonder sketches for tiles were created by the artist Georges Kolas for 10 years - the station meets travelers with sparkling blue tiles laid out in bizarre panels and ornaments.

The walls of the main station hall are decorated with stunning imagination large-scale mosaic canvases of blue and white range, vying for the title of primacy of origin with the Russian gall. On the walls of the station are depicted scenes from the life of the brilliant monarch João I, under whose rule Portugal flourished.

In combination with paintings of peasant life from colorful mosaics and triple stucco around the perimeter of the snow-white ceiling, these exquisite creations of Georges Kolas invariably attract the admiring eyes of visitors. 20,000 units of glazed painted tiles went to the creation of wall masterpieces that ensured the Portuguese station Sao Bento its worldwide fame.
