Ostashkov is a city in the Russian Federation, the district center of the Tver region, located on the Valdai hills, on a peninsula in the southern part of Lake Seliger, 190 km west of Tver. The population is 21.7 thousand people (2001). One of the first mentions of the settlement near modern Ostashkov is contained in the letter of the Lithuanian Prince Olgerd to Patriarch Philotheus, which refers to Klitschen - the most outlying town of the Moscow principality. In 1393, the Novgorod “hunting men” burned Klitschen. According to legend, the only remaining resident - fisherman Evstafiy (Ostashko) moved to the peninsula south of Klichen, where the city of Ostashkov will appear. Since 1434, the Ostashkov villages are known, on the site of which later the settlements Ostashkovskaya and Timofeevskaya appeared. Around the settlements in 1587 built a fortress, called Ostashkovsky town. The status of the city Ostashkov received in 1770. In 1785, the townspeople in memory of the burned fortress on the former city rampart was installed Val Pillar (chapel-obelisk). In the 18-19 centuries, leather crafts developed in Ostashkov.
In 1594, Nilov Desert was founded on Stolbnoye Island, which later became one of the richest and most visited in Russia. In 1820 Nilov desert and Ostashkov visited Tsar Alexander I. After the revolution, the monastery was closed. In 1939, a camp for Polish prisoners of war, mostly police and border guards, was established here. The architectural ensemble of the Nile Desert has largely retained its original appearance, restoration work is underway here.
The architectural image of the city of Ostashkov was created after the almost complete demolition of "pre-regular" buildings. Among the surviving buildings of the 17th century are the Trinity Cathedral, the Resurrection Church and the bell towers standing separately from them. The tent bell tower of the Resurrection Church is considered one of the best buildings of the "candle" type. This is the oldest building of the city, dating from 1689. The Resurrection Church itself, built at the same time, was greatly distorted by later alterations. The Trinity Cathedral, built in 1697, also underwent restructuring. In the building of the Trinity Cathedral, the Ostashkov Museum of Local Lore works.
Architectural interest is the complex of the Life Monastery (founded in 1716), which includes a cathedral in the name of the icon of the Smolensk Mother of God (Odigetria) with a refectory, bell tower and southern chapel (1737-1756), the gate church of John the Theologian (1768), fraternal buildings of 1772 and 1779, a fence with towers (1761). In the Znamensky women’s monastery, the Ascension Cathedral (founded in 1748), walls and towers of 1760 have been preserved. In Ostashkov many monuments and civil architecture of the 18-19 centuries, including residential buildings with mezzanine. To the east of the Trinity Cathedral is the Town Hall - the oldest civil building in the city (early 18th century), reminiscent of the ancient Russian chambers. Ostashkov is the birthplace of the author of the first Russian “Arithmetic” L. F. Magnitsky, who wrote his textbook by order of Peter I. Modern Ostashkov is the center of tourism on Lakes Seliger and Upper Volga. 10 km from the city in the village of Rogozha there is a nature museum of the Seliger region.
