Ataman Bridge

ooh Kremenchug, St. Petersburg, Russia

Description:

Atamansky bridge is located in the east of the Obvodny Canal, along Krechenchug Street and Glukhoozerskoe highway. It was named after the barracks of the Life Guards of the Ataman Regiment, which used to be nearby. In 1853, the construction of barracks for the Cossacks under the project of Chernik was completed on the Obvodny Canal. The buildings of the horse arena were built later, as well as the regimental temple. Previously, behind the windows of the Cossack barracks, behind the canal grew a dense pine forest, on the lake there were boats for the Cossacks.

In the XIX century, on today’s Atamanskaya Street, the American Bridge was built, named after its engineer William Gau. The bridge differed from others by its combination of wooden belts with bevels and metal vertical weights. Engineer Gau did not have more accurate calculations, so he performed the section empirically. Subsequently, a new three-span road bridge made of wood was built nearby, and only in 1950 wooden elements were replaced by metal ones.
