Monument to sunken ships
Russia, the city of Sevastopol, the embankment of Primorsky Boulevard
Description:
In 1853, Admiral Nakhimov defeated a squadron of Turks near the Turkish city of Sinop. European states were wary of Russia’s victory and persuaded Turkey to go to war with Russia using their help. They formed an alliance between England, France and Italy (Italy soon left them).
In 1854, the Union fleet approached Sevastopol. They wanted to completely destroy the Black Sea Fleet and capture Sevastopol and other cities of Crimea. The main defense was V. A. Kornilov and P. S. Nakhimov. They decided to sink the sailing ships of the Black Sea Fleet to the bottom. The sunken ships with their masts must penetrate the bottoms of enemy ships, and from the shore they will be shot by batteries.
In honor of this event, the sculptor A.G. Adamson created a monument to the sunken ships. It's near Primorsky Boulevard. It can be quickly reached from Nakhimov Square.
