Golden Buddha Temple

Thanon Mittaphap Thai-China Talat Noi, Samphanthawong, Bangkok 10100, Thailand

Description:

Wat Trai Mit, or Golden Buddha Temple, is one of the most attractive places for tourists in the capital of Thailand. It got its name due to the statue in the form of a sitting Buddha, cast from pure gold. The eyes of the Buddha are made of real pearls, and the pupils are made of black sapphire. The statue makes a huge impression on every visitor to the temple.

Interesting history of the statue. It was created in the XIII century, it was brought to Bangkok only in the middle of the XX century, especially for the newly built temple. No one had any idea that it was made of gold, because in the Middle Ages it was covered with plaster in order to save from enemies.

It is said that the mystery of the Golden Buddha was revealed during a severe thunderstorm, when lightning struck directly into the statue and chipped off a piece of plaster. However, there is a less romantic version of the story: the cast fought back when the statue was installed. However, this did not affect the beauty of the Golden Buddha, and it still shines brightly.
