Museum of Corrections
Than Maha Chai, Samran Rat, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok 10200, Thailand
About the company:
The Bangkok Correctional Museum is an ancient place that used to be a prison. In 1990, the Thai government moved the prison to Lat Yao, and turned the empty site into Rimmani Nart Park. The buildings – the building’s body, the prison wall with two observation towers – were preserved and converted into the Museum of Corrections.
In the museum you can see wax figures made in life size, which play out scenes of torture and punishment. The figures are enclosed in various instruments of torture and amaze with their diversity and fiction. For example, the most popular punishment in those days was when a human-sized wooden ball was made for prisoners and sharp nails were hammered into the ball, and then the prisoner was placed inside and given the ball to the elephant that kicked him.
The museum houses a souvenir shop, as well as furniture and handicraft shops that Thai prisoners worked on. Even in the museum you can listen to stories about the difficult fate of prisoners and the abuse of them by the prison guard.
