Sultan Emir Mosque

Emir Sultan Mosque, Emirsultan Mh., 16360 Bursa/Bursa Province, Turkey

Description:

The Sultan Emir Mosque is a Muslim temple, which is a vivid example of the Ottoman Rococo style. Built in the 14th century, the temple was restored in 1804 by order of the Ottoman Sultan Selim III and rebuilt in 1868, which brought some changes to the original appearance of the structure. Here is the mausoleum of the Sultan Emir himself, whose name the mosque is named.

The Sultan Emir Mosque and the mausoleum stand on opposite sides of a large courtyard with a swimming pool at the entrance. Sultan Emir, also known as Semseddin Mehmed Ali, was once a magician and dervish from Bukhara, and after marrying the daughter of Sultan Baezid I became his personal astrologer. You can get into the courtyard through the Eastern and Western portals, decorated with pointed wooden arches. The mosque and mausoleum are surrounded by many fountains built in the 14th and 18th centuries.

The reason for the changes in the architecture of the mosque was an earthquake in 1855, which damaged most of the structure. Reconstruction in the early 19th century was only a temporary measure that allowed the temple to last until the beginning of a large-scale reconstruction in 1868. Currently, the Sultan Emir Mosque is one of the favorite places of pilgrimage for Turkish Muslims.
