Ancient history
Marmaris is located on the southwestern coast of Turkey, in an area historically known as Karia. Its strategic location on the Aegean coast has made the city an important port since antiquity.
The age of antiquity:
In ancient times, the city was called Physkos or Phrygia, and was part of the Carian kingdom. Trade and fishing were developed here. Marmaris was known as a small, but protected natural bay port.
Archaeological finds, including fortress walls and remains of ancient buildings, indicate the existence of settlements here since the 2nd millennium BC.
Greco-Roman period:
IV-II centuries BC. Caria was captured by Alexander the Great and later came under Greek influence. At this time, temples, theaters and harbors were built in the region. After being incorporated into the Roman Empire, the city retained its importance as a port center, especially for the trade in olive oil, wine and fish.
Middle Ages
After the fall of the Roman Empire, Marmaris became part of the Byzantine Empire.
Byzantine period (4-15 centuries):
The city was fortified, new fortifications were built, which partially survived to this day. The Byzantines used it as a defensive post against pirates and Arab attacks.
Crusades and Genoese:
In the Middle Ages, the city was attacked by crusaders and pirates. The Genoese sometimes controlled trade in the region. At this time, the city's population was multi-ethnic, combining Greeks, Carians and Byzantines.
Ottoman period
In the XVI century Marmaris finally became part of the Ottoman Empire.
The city received a fortified fortress that still exists today. This fortress was a strategic site for the protection of the coast and control of sea routes in the Aegean and Mediterranean seas.
During this period, the population of the city was engaged in crafts, shipbuilding and fishing. Marmaris remained a small port town until the XIX century.
