Excursion to Fethiye & Telmesos
Description:
Oludeniz, the most important symbol of Fethiye, amazes people with its magnificent beach. The pine road to Oludeniz from Fethiye is 14 km. At the end of the descent from the slopes, to the shore, you see the wonderful, purple-blue color of the Mediterranean Sea. This is Belchekız Bay. When you walk along the coast that runs through the bay, you admire the uniqueness of Oludeniz Beach, a magical place, the shore is covered with white sand. Light reflected in the water and sand at the bottom, gives an unusual turquoise color. The shadow of the mighty Babadaga Mountain and the pine forest falls on the sea, and this enriches the impressive turquoise color. The name Belchekyz is based on a legend. Ships that passed here in ancient times were anchored in the open sea. Sailors sailed by boat to the shore to collect drinking water. One day, when the youngest son of the captain went to get water, he was met by a beautiful girl and they fell in love at first sight. The young man had to return to the ship. Beljekyz, the girl’s name, looked forward to the seaside every day when her lover would return. The young man would come for water every time the ship sailed past, so they would meet. One day there was a storm, and the young sailor told his father that there was a sheltered cove. The old wolf didn't believe him, as he knew of his son's heartbreaking adventure. He thought his son was willing to crash the ship to see his beloved. And on the ship there was a quarrel between them. Meanwhile, a storm, waves and wind dragged the ship to the rocks where it could crash. Seeing this, the captain has time to quickly cling to the helm, and the son falls from the side into the sea. The ship turned and successfully entered the bay. But unfortunately, the guy drowned. Learning about the tragic fate of his beloved, Belchekyz from the rock threw herself into the sea and also died. It was in Belchekyz that the girl died, and the place where the guy drowned was called Oludeniz. Perhaps the color of the sea, which changes depending on the course of the sun, reminds of a guy and a girl and their great love. The Kydrak Nature Park, which occupies 950 square meters in Oludeniz, was declared a reserve and taken under protection. This area, covering the Oludeniz lagoon and the Kydrak beach, is also in a special conservation zone. For those who want to have a picnic, there is room for a picnic. It is forbidden to light a barbecue between May and October. You can rent sun loungers and umbrellas, do water sports (canoeing, parasailing, water skiing, bananas). With the help of the created laboratory, daily measurements of sea water on the beach of Belchekız are carried out. Kayakoy: 8 km from Fethiye. According to philological data, the history of Kayaköy, which is located in the south and known as Karmylassos in antiquity, later as Levissi, was founded in the 3rd century BC. All the structures on the hillside were built by Greeks who moved in the middle of the first quarter of the 20th century. Greek Cypriots living in the late Ottoman Empire had their rights granted to minorities in the late 19th century. At the time of the founding of the Turkish Republic, by agreement, the Turks and Greeks exchanged populations. And as a result of the evacuation, the city was abandoned, houses with doors and windows, empty streets, dilapidated buildings today look like a ghost town. Over time and due to natural factors, it continues to collapse, you can count about 400 houses that are located on the slopes. These are usually two-storey buildings with underground cisterns where rainwater from the roofs is collected. In addition to houses, there are many chapels, 2 large churches and 1 school. Wandering through the corners of the village, the footprints of the old settlers will take us back in time. Saklykent Canyon, formed as a result of the earthquake, has such a structure of cracks and faults on the limestone earth, which is easily eroded by water and reaches 18 km in length and 180 meters in height, so it is impossible to get into it from above. The Canyon is accessible via a 200-metre wooden bridge attached by iron bars to its steep slopes and is a frequent destination for local and foreign tourists, especially in summer. The beauty of the canyon has not diminished from its vitality and amazingly clear waters, as it has been untouched for a long time and has been away from people. Its length is 14 km and it is one of the rarest in the world. In the canyon, 16 caves and some have been found traces of life dating back 3,000 years.
