Cleopatra Island - Kedrai

Description:

Information about the history and foundation of this ancient city: Kedrai is located on the island of Cedir (Cedre) on the east coast of the Gulf of Keramos (sinus ceramicus) now Gokova. The island, which in Turkish times was called Chehiroglu, is now called Cedir. The word Kedrai is believed to have come from the Luwi language. It probably switched to Hellenic and became Cedrai or Cedrai, meaning "the city of the people of Kadra." Although the name of the island comes from the cedar, today there are no cedars on the island. The length of the coast of the island is about 800 m and adjoins the island of Orata and the Small Island. The settlement of Sedir was formed on the eastern side of the isthmus dividing the island into two parts. The city theater, sanctuaries, residence, port and many other important civil and religious buildings are located in this walled area. Legend has it that Mark Antony and Cleopatra visited this island. The unique sand on the shore was very liked by the Egyptian queen and the commander Mark Antony decided to give this island to his beloved. The locals called it Cleopatra Island.
