The Pearl Sculpture
Upon entry into Marmaris, Turkey
Description:
The intersection of two seas – the Aegean and the Mediterranean – forms Marmaris, a port and resort town in southwestern Turkey. An unusual sculpture – a pearl in a semi-open globe – is located at the entrance to Marmaris.
The symbolism of this figure is associated with the origin of the name of the city. According to one version, the name of the city comes from the abbreviation Le Mar Maris, which means “sea pearl”. Due to its location, this city is often called the pearl of the Aegean Sea. Marmaris, like a pearl, is protected from the mainland by powerful forests, and from the sea side by an island that prevents destructive waves from entering the city.
