Domitian's Arch Gate

Hierapolis, the ancient city

Description:

Hierapolis (ancient city) originally belonged to the Romans, and is now located in modern Turkey and is a landmark that is willingly shown to tourists. There is indeed something to see here: ancient buildings are well preserved on a huge territory: an amphitheater, several temples, a necropolis.

The arch is a kind of entrance to the city. This gate was built in the I century AD. Immediately outside the gate was a bath: before entering the city, the traveler had to wash (so the Romans tried to protect themselves from possible epidemics). Once the Arch of Domitian was a two-story, only the first floor has survived, which is well preserved only on one of the towers. The towers are made of stones and were connected by three rather high arches. They were built in the 1st century CE by Anatolian proconsul Julius Frontinus.
