Fountain of the Three Pools / Monumental Fountain of Nympheum
07330 Side/Antalya Province, Turkey
Description:
The monumental fountain, or Nymphaeum, is one of the most amazing and unique architectural monuments in Turkey. It was built in honor of the Roman emperor Vespasian and dates from approximately the II century BC.
Nympheum is located in the northeast of the city behind the fortress walls, opposite the Great Gate. This is the first building that opens to the eyes of tourists who entered through the Central Gate into the old part of the city.
To this day, only two floors of the fountain have survived, but in ancient times it was three-storey, 5 meters high, and 35 meters wide. Ancient builders paid close attention to the aesthetic component. Marble niches were used in the architecture of the monument, in each of which streams of water flowed in the sun. The composition was decorated with Corinthian columns and statues. The water came from the river.
On the outside, the fountain was lined with marble and decorated with frescoes. A millennium later, this monumental structure has preserved the spirit of that era and amazes the imagination with its grandeur and beauty.
