Temples of Apollo and Athens
Barbaros Cd, 07600 Side/Antalya, Turkey
Description:
The ruins of the temples of Apollo and Athena in Side are located in a picturesque place on the bay and are considered one of the most romantic sights of Turkey. According to legend, in one of these temples, the Egyptian queen Cleopatra invited Mark Antony on a date.
Both temples date back to 150 BC and form a single architectural and historical complex. From both buildings survived fragments of white marble columns and stylobates. But in the penultimate decade of the last century, part of the colonnade of the Temple of Apollo - six columns 8.9 meters high - was restored and became a symbol of the city. The time and cause of the destruction of the temples are unknown. According to the official version, it took place before the fifth century AD.
