Columned streets of Side
Description:
Side is a resort town on the southern coast of the Mediterranean Sea of Turkey. Its name in Turkish means “garnet”. The population of Side is small, only about 4,000 inhabitants. In the summer months, the population increases to tens of thousands, tourists come here from all over Europe.
Side is an ancient port city known for its long beaches, and the Greco-Roman ruins are a great day trip. Side's story is long and exciting. It began with the fact that it was occupied by Alexander the Great, the Greeks and Romans. Today, you can still see relics of its ancient past outside the main center and around the city. One of the most iconic white marble columns of the Hellenistic temple of Athena stands near the harbor. When you stand there, you are amazed at how many years ago this beauty was created. You will also find remnants of a 2nd-century antique theater that held up to 15,000 people. Other attractions are scattered throughout; a museum, a restored Roman bath complex, and other ruins.
