Description:

During our tour of the ancient district of Sultanahmed we visit the main attractions of the old city and get acquainted with the history of ancient Istanbul and its significant places.

  • Our fascinating tour will begin with a visit to the Hippodrome – the second largest racecourse after the Roman Circus Maximus and one of the most important historical squares of Istanbul, which was the center for the political, social, sports and cultural life of Constantinople. There were often sports games, chariot races, and sometimes riots.
  • At Hippodrome Square, we will explore three monuments that remain from the grand Hippodrome; the Egyptian Obelisk of Theodosius, which has a 3,500-year history, which was transferred from Egypt. The Serpent Column was brought from Delphi in Greece and the Openwork Stone Column of Emperor Constantine VII.
  • Then we will visit the Blue Mosque, one of the most important symbols of the city of Istanbul. It is the only mosque with six minarets. The Blue Mosque is considered one of the greatest inventions of Islamic and world architecture. The mosque is called Blue because of the magnificent cladding with blue faience tiles.
  • Next we go down to the Basilica Cistern, one of the largest and best preserved historical underground reservoirs of Constantinople. The vaulted ceiling of which is supported by 336 eight-meter columns is a unique example of Byzantine engineering. The cistern of the Basilica kept drinking water in case of a siege or drought. Walk along the paths among the columns, and immerse yourself in the medieval atmosphere of Constantinople, learn about the mystery of two jellyfish lying under two columns in the far corner of the reservoir.
  • After visiting the Basilica Cistern, we will move to Hagia Sophia – a world-famous monument of Byzantine architecture, a centuries-old symbol of the “golden age” of the Byzantine Empire. Hagia Sophia Cathedral today is the largest cathedral of the Orthodox world. It amazes with its scale, beautiful interior and Byzantine mosaics.
  • And of course, how to visit Sultanahmed and not visit Topkapi Palace? - The center of power of the Ottoman Empire XV - XIX centuries. The palace complex consists of many pavilions, kitchen, harem, library, treasury, etc. It presents unique products of porcelain, gold, silver and precious stones, an invaluable collection of ancient manuscripts and relics.
  • Finally, we will conclude our tour with a visit to the Covered Market - one of the oldest and most famous eastern markets of the city, where more than 50 streets, about four thousand shops, warehouses, mosques and even a school and a bath house fit under a single roof. Here you can buy various antiques, souvenirs, Turkish carpets, jewelry, fabrics, etc. Even for those who aren’t interested in shopping, it’s a pretty interesting historical monument that deserves your time.
