Taksim Square

Taksim Meydani, Istanbul, T rkiye

Description:

Are you looking for a modern Istanbul? Come to the Taksim Square area, named after the octagonal water distribution station. In Turkish, taxim means distribution. The aforementioned station was built in 1732 during the reign of Sultan Mahmoud I and was to supply houses in the Beyoglu part, which was constantly suffering from water shortages. In its central part there is a monument to Repbulika (Jumhuryet Aniti). A 1928 sculpture depicts Atatürk with his soldiers. Residents of Istanbul come here on November 10 to pay tribute to the former Turkish leader, at exactly 9:05, for a minute stand still.
