Istanbul

Museum of Calligraphy

About the company:

This unique museum is the only museum of calligraphy in Turkey. It is located in the building of the former madrasah of the Bayazit mosque, where the municipal library was previously located. By the way, the customer of the mosque Sultan Bayazit II was himself a passionate lover of calligraphy.

Istanbul has long been the capital of Islamic calligraphy, and the presence of this museum has only strengthened this reputation. The museum’s rich collection has everything related to calligraphic art: handwritten Qurans written in Nesih, Muhaqqak and Kufi fonts, manuscripts in Moroccan and Hindu languages, seals, tablets, samples, hyllies (these are works that describe the properties of the Prophet Muhammad) and numerous miniatures with images, in particular, Medina, Muzdalif and Mina. Among other sacred relics are the veil of the Kaaba, the earth from the grave of the prophet, the saqal and the sheriff (the beard of the prophet) and many other exhibits of religious value. Also in the museum are samples of calligraphic works by Turkish sultans Abdulmejid, Mahmoud II and Ahmed III, who themselves were fond of calligraphy.

The museum is located in Beyazit district.
