Sirkeci Railway Station
Description:
Sirkeci railway station is located in the center of Istanbul. There are domestic and international transportation in the western direction. Two railway lines connect Istanbul with Thessaloniki and Bucharest.
The main building of the station, built in 1890, deserves special attention. The total area of its premises is 1200 square meters. It is a prime example of Ottoman architecture. The dominant elements of the building are the facade decorated with many arched windows and relief images, as well as two hollow clock towers located on either side of it. The dome of the railway station has a trapezoidal shape, it contrasts strongly with the general appearance of the structure, as it looks more modern. On both sides of the entrance to the building there are long corridors, replete with an abundance of arched openings and skillful painting, made in bard tones.
In general, the building looks very elegant and attracts the enchanted eyes of tourists. Next to it is an old locomotive, which has a plate indicating the year of creation. It is a local landmark and the calling card of the station.
