Ancient cities of Russia: Kerch

Kerch is an amazing city. Among historians, it is known as an ancient open-air city-museum, it is called one of those cities that are considered “eternal”.

The years of the founding of Kerch - 610 - 590 BC, it is one of the oldest cities in Russia. Known its former names Cherkio, Vosporo, Korchev, Bosporus, Panticapey.

Nature monuments

The unique geographical position of Kerch: the city is located in the east of the Kerch Peninsula (Cape Lantern is the easternmost point of the peninsula), and is washed by the waters of the Black and Azov Seas (on Kos Chushka you can swim in two seas almost simultaneously).

Famous places of attraction: Chokrak salt lake, Cape Zyuk, Mud volcano Jau Tepe.

Monuments of history, architecture, war memorials

Mount Mithridates is the geographical center of the city and a famous landmark. In antiquity, it was the ancient Greek city of Panticapaeus. During the Great Patriotic War, the top of the mountain became the center of fierce battles. In memory of those tragic events, the Obelisk of Glory to the Immortal Heroes on Mount Mithridates was erected on the mountain.

On the mountain leads Mithridates staircase - a visiting card and decoration of the city. On the way to the top you need to overcome 423 steps.

Panticapaeum - at the top of Mount Mithridates are preserved the ruins of Panticapaeum, one of the first polises that were founded by the colonists of Greece in the late 7th century BC.

Fortress Yeni-Kale - Italian Goloppo built a fortress to protect the Ottoman Empire from the passage of Russian ships between the Azov Black Sea. In 1771 the fortress came under the rule of Russia.

Now the fortress is located within the city, and its visitors have the opportunity not only to see a unique monument of history and architecture, but also to have a good time on the deserted local beaches.

Adzhimushkay quarries - exposition in honor of the heroic episode of the Great Patriotic War. The defense of the quarries lasted 170 days, during which more than 13,000 soldiers and civilians died (May 16 - October 30, 1942). Now the Museum of Defense History of Adzhimushkay quarries is opened here.

Kerch fortress - a unique monument of fortification construction is located on Cape Ak-Burun. The fortress was built to protect the southern borders of the Russian Empire in 1857-65, architect E. I. Totleben.

The crypt of Demeter is a funerary ancient burial with frescoes and tombs (1-2 centuries AD).

The royal mound is an interesting mystical place, a silent witness to the former glory of Panticapea. The estimated time of construction is the 4th century BC. Another famous mound of Kerch is Melek-Chesmensky.

Kerch beaches

Summer at the resort is moderately hot, the average July temperature does not exceed + 23 C. The swimming season usually lasts from early May to mid-September.

Kerch beaches are covered with shell and soft sand, the coast of the Black and Azov seas is considered one of the most picturesque on the peninsula.

In the vicinity of the villages of Golden and Resort stretch General beaches.

Improved beaches of Kerch: Youth, Moscow, Smorzhevsky, Turtle and others. Some of them are suitable for family holidays, some should rest without small children due to the lack of comfort and uncomfortable entry into the water.

Wild beaches: the coast near the fortress of Yeni-Kale, sandstone on the Arshintsev Spit, "Kapkany" near the microdistrict on the eastern outskirts of the city
