"We are two banks by the same river": the amazing city of Tutaev
The city is on seven hills,
Seven keys, seven ravines.
(Popular rumor)
The history of Romanov - Borisoglebsk began in the XIII century, when the cities of Romanov and Borisoglebsk existed on two banks of the Volga River.
The city of Romanov was founded by the Uglican prince Roman Vladimirovich, and Borisoglebsk, they say, appeared even earlier.

1822 - by decree of Emperor Alexander I, the two cities are united into one - Romanov-Borisoglebsk.
In 1918, a solemn meeting dedicated to the first anniversary of the October Revolution decided to give the city a new name Tutaev-Lunacharsk. Tutaev - in honor of the ordinary Red Army soldier Ilya Tutaev, who died during the suppression of the Yaroslavl rebellion. Lunacharsk - in honor of the People's Commissar of Education A.V. Lunacharsky.
Since the 1990s, Tutaev authorities have tried to return the city to its historical name, but an independent survey of residents, conducted by the sociological agency AKSIO, showed the real mood of the citizens: most of them opposed the renaming.
“They need the left bank, the right bank.”

From one coast to the other you can get by ferry or motor boat in summer, and in winter - on foot on the ice. There is no bridge between left and right bank Tutaev. There were plans to build a cable car across the river, but they have not yet come true.
On the Romanov side, ancient churches have been preserved (Arkhangelsk Church, the Intercession Church, the Holy Cross Cathedral, the Kazan Transfiguration Church), as well as stone mansions of Romanov merchants and wooden houses of wealthy citizens of the XVIII-XIX centuries.
