What awaits you?
The obligatory program includes breakfast in the heart of old Baku, a visit to a real oriental bazaar, lunch in a fish restaurant and dinner in the main square. The best national cafes with a pleasant authentic atmosphere and real Azerbaijani cuisine are waiting for you.
Breakfast at home in the Old Town.
Before breakfast, you need to boost your appetite, so the tour will begin with a tour of the historical sights of the old city of Icheri Sheher.
You will hear legends intertwined with historical events that once took place near these dusty stone walls. Admire the blue-eyed mosques and majestic palaces, hold your hand on the walls of medieval baths, take pictures against the background of fortress walls and caravanserais. Ancient walls remember the old days, but are still strong and majestic. Unsurprisingly, some of the buildings are still in use – for example, one of the ancient caravanserais houses a wonderful national café. This is where you will stop for breakfast.
Traditional Azerbaijani breakfast is a simple, tasty and hearty food that energizes the whole day: hot fragrant tortillas straight from the tandoor, homemade butter, delicious cheese from farm milk, thick amber honey, hot tea with herbs and strong coffee - black or cream.
While you are tasting simple appetizing dishes, the guide will tell you what dishes the Azerbaijanis preferred in ancient times and how their diet has changed now.
Walk through the eastern bazaar and tasting sweets.
After a hearty and delicious breakfast in the Old Town, you will go to the largest bazaar in Baku. For a real Azerbaijani, going to the bazaar is an important and responsible occupation that takes a lot of time. And no wonder: you need not only to buy food, but also to bargain, discuss all the city news and see friends. However, you will understand why it takes so much time to go to the bazaar - smiling sellers meet each buyer as a native, offer to try everything, touch and try it on. Even if you did not intend to buy anything at first, you are unlikely to leave without shopping. And how to resist, when at every step you are offered to taste the freshest honey ("yesterday my grandfather chased!"), placed on the counter jars of herbs and spices and directly in the hand give a scrap of scarlet watermelon flowing out of juice. The Oriental Bazaar is an extremely picturesque spectacle, it delights all the senses at once. These are mountains of blood-red pomegranates, emerald-green watermelons, and fragrant stacks of melons, and decays of vegetables on picturesque shelves, and rows of potted jars with jams of all varieties. And Baku sweets! Their names sound like a wonderful song: honey baklava, nut halva, girmabadam, peshvenk ...
Caspian Sea gifts for lunch.
After a walk through the bazaar, you will travel to the vicinity of Baku. It is here that for hundreds of years hardworking farmers grow the same cucumbers, tomatoes, figs and grapes, which then fall on the shelves.
You will see the most interesting local attractions. Among them is a real Zoroastrian temple and a burning mountain. Did you know that many people in Baku still honor pagan traditions? You will find out why and how this happens while walking.
In the market, you've only teased your appetite, so it's time for lunch! Lunch will be held in one fishing village from fish dishes, which are highly appreciated by all gourmets of Baku.
The main trump cards of this place are fish kebabs with spices and dishes in pomegranate and kizyl sauce with barberry with tomatoes from the gifts of the Caspian Sea - the best Caspian fish (bersh, omul, sturgeon, beluga, mullet). The chef says that he uses several dozen spices in the marinade and keeps this unique formula in the strictest secret.
Dinner: lamb and real Azerbaijani pilaf.
After lunch, you will return to the city to make a small promenade through interesting places covered with urban legends. The streets of the center of the capital are always picturesque, backgammon lovers gather in the yards in the evenings and the evening sun so wonderfully falls on the walls of cozy houses. After strolling through the streets of Baku and hearing a few more fascinating stories about people and events, you will go for dinner at the national restaurant.
Local chefs are specialists in traditional Azerbaijani cuisine. They masterfully prepare dishes from lamb and almost a dozen types of pilaf - from giyme plov to brocade dosheme. Try what you like, but make sure to leave room for dessert. The sweetness here is above all praise!
