Cairo

Church of the Virgin Mary

Cairo, Egypt

Description:

If you walk along Old Cairo in the direction of the water gate, where a crowd of tourists usually accumulates, you can see the entire building towering above everyone and the snow-white color. It will "hang" directly above the gate, as if floating in the air.
This is the Church of St. Mary, one of the oldest temples in Egypt in general. It was built in the 200s AD, and more than a millennium later has survived almost in its original form.
The Church of St. Mary is colorful from the inside - ornaments, mosaics, carved iconostasis. There are about a hundred icons in the building, so there is something to see.

The church is within walking distance of the Mar Girgis metro in Cairo. You can fly directly to Cairo.
