Catacombs of Serapium

Saqqara, Giza, Egypt

Description:

The catacombs of the Serapium are the catacombs of the sacred bull Apis. They are located in Saqqara, a huge cemetery where Egyptian nobles were buried, on 7 kilometers of the Western Desert. Saqqara owes its name to the god of death Sokar, who was revered by the people of Memphis. For a long time Saccrara was under the sand, but the efforts of the French archaeologist Aguste Marietta it was discovered. At the entrance to the catacombs are statues of Greek poets and philosophers. They were built in 323-282 BC. The sarcophagus of Apis amazes with its large size and casts a shadow, giving the desired coolness to tourists. One of the rituals dedicated to the god of death was witnessed by Herodotus when he visited Egypt. You can get there by excursion bus.
