St. Macarius Monastery

Wadi El Natrun, Beheira Governorate, 92 km northwest of Cairo

Description:

The Monastery of St. Macarius, or as it is also called, Deir Abu Makar is the oldest monastery of its kind, located in Egypt near the city of Cairo.

In fact, this is not just a God-pleasing place, as the name may seem. He has a peculiarity. If the evil Bedouins suddenly want to destroy the monastery of St. Macarius for their amusement, then they will not succeed, because it is a real fortress with a defensive wall.
Because of the famine that raged in these lands since the XIV century, the monastery was very empty, 50 years ago there lived only 6 clergymen. Fortunately, soon began to invest in the monastery, and now there are about a hundred people.

The monastery is located in the desert between two cities - Alexandria and Cairo, so you can reach any of them, and then get to the monastery itself by tourist bus.
