Wadi Ryan Falls
Qaroun, Abshwai, Fayoum, Egypt
Description:
If you are looking for Egyptian waterfalls, you will be surprised to learn that Wadi el Rayan is the only waterfall in the country. When the main lake extends beyond its limit, the stream falls towards a deeper area where another lake forms. As the stream descends, natural rocks have been exposed and cascades have formed at this point.
You can start your journey to the waterfalls in Egypt from Wadi Hitan, a nature reserve known as the Valley of the Whales, about 90 km from Fayum. The Whale Valley or Wadi Hitan is located in the Wadi El Rayan Protected Area and is also recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Then head to Lake Karun, which is en route to Wadi El Ryan. Lake Karun is considered the oldest natural lake on the planet, as well as the third largest lake in Egypt. The lake provides you with stunning views, as well as the opportunity to see many intriguing fauna and greenery. This is a paradise for ornithologists, they will really feel delighted here, as the area around the waterfalls in Egypt is a safe home for migratory birds.
Lakes Wadi Ryan and especially Karun in Fayum itself in winter become the habitat of a huge number of waterfowl, ducks, waders, terns and gulls. When you reach Wadi el Rayan Falls to see one of Egypt’s few waterfalls in the western desert, spend some time rejuvenating around the two lakes to explore Wadi el Rayan.
You can ride the popular wooden sailboat and wander around to take some stunning photos. Since Wadi el Rayan is a very famous area for both holidaymakers and locals, you will also find several cafes here. There are also several merchants selling nice souvenirs that can be bought at a bargain price.
You should also interact with local fishermen, many of whom will be happy to sell you their catch. It will be really nice to eat freshly caught grilled fish on an open fire alone, or even fishermen can cook it for you.
