St. Vlach's Church
Croatia, Dubrovnik, str. Stradoon
Description:
The Church of St. Vlach is located on the central square of the Old Town of Dubrovnik on Stradun Street. This church is loved and protected by the citizens. Saint Vlach means the Holy Great Martyr, who at the beginning of the 4th century was a bishop in the city of Sebaste.
The temple was built in the 17th century. Previously, there was a Romanesque church, which even managed to defend itself in a strong earthquake in 1667, but in 1706, unfortunately, was destroyed by fire.
The plan of the newest temple was created by the architect M. Gropellia. The construction took place from 1706 to 1715, the Church was built according to the Baroque. The elegant facade, the most massive staircase, as well as a large dome add unforgettable views to the church.
The altar was decorated with the figure of St. Vlach, which was decorated by masters before the construction of the temple itself. Every year in the city of Dubrovnik, a holiday is held in honor of St. Vlach.
