What kind of transport is popular among Russian travelers?

According to tour operators, the demand for rail transportation from tourists is growing. Especially in southern directions, with which there are no air links, but which remain the main points of attraction of tourists in the Russian Federation.

Commercial Director of the National Tour Operator ALEAN Oksana Bulakh: “Trains have become the most suitable option for those who can not go on a trip by personal transport...”

Planes do not choose everything for a number of reasons:

  • Many are afraid.
  • There are no flights between the regions,
  • Railway romance is a must-have part of a tourist adventure.

There are tourists (for example, some pregnant women) who are not shown air travel for medical reasons.

The driver of the growth of railway passenger traffic in Russia is high-speed trains. Interest in “Sapsans” on the Moscow-Petersburg line is growing, and to “ordinary” trains is decreasing.

Rail transport is breaking records. By the end of 2022, for the first time in many years, passenger traffic of railways outstripped aviation – as ATOR analysts predicted. But riding the train in most cases is longer, more expensive, more difficult.

Passenger traffic of Russian Railways in long-distance travel in January 2023 increased by 18.7% compared to the same period in 2022, amounting to 8.8 million people.

Russian Railways is recovering from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. At the end of 2022, long-distance rail transportation amounted to 108.3 million people, which was 17.8% more than in 2021, but still 7% less than in pre-crisis 2019.

Railway passenger traffic in 2022 surpassed aviation. Russian airlines have used 95 million passengers. On domestic flights (the impact of the international passenger traffic of Russian Railways is minimal) – 79 million people.

Another problem associated with changing the plane to the train – tourists less rest and spend more time on the road.

In 2022, tourists began to buy vouchers lasting an average day less – this time they lay on the road.

“The average check for travel is increasing, since train tickets in the compartment have long become more expensive than plane tickets,” confirms the director of the tour operator ALEAN.

Train travel is difficult to plan - the technically available depth of sales is less. For some trains tickets can be purchased 90 days before departure, but for the most part - only 45 days.
