Maldives may start "vaccinated tourism"

Tourists arriving on the islands will be offered the vaccine as part of a tripartite initiative to rebuild the affected tourism sector.

This was announced by the Minister of Tourism of the Maldives Abdulla Mausum. Vaccinated tourism may soon be the most convenient way to visit the country.

Tourists now need a negative PCR test and a hotel voucher to enter the Maldives. However, the authorities said that from April 20 to provide a negative PCR test for coronavirus vaccinated tourists will not have to.

Mausum said the country's health agency would "very soon - perhaps even this week" make a statement on unrestricted entry of vaccinated arrivals.

The Maldives is an archipelago in South Asia that is famous for its beaches and crystal clear waters. The economy of the islands depends on the tourism industry – about 67% of its GDP is directly or indirectly accounted for by the tourism sector.

Vaccination of foreign tourists should not be a problem. The Maldives has received vaccine donations from India, China and the World Health Organization’s Covax program, plus additional supplies from Singapore – all in order to meet this year’s target of 1.5 million foreign tourists and 10 million hotel nights, with 350,000 visitors in just a few months. These are mainly travelers from India, Russia, Ukraine.
