Russians became leaders of tourist flow in one of the largest megacities in the world
In 2020, the number of foreign tourists arriving in the IstanbulIt decreased by 66.4% to 5 million people.
Most of the tourists came from Russia. The leadership of Russians in foreign tourist flow to Istanbul was recorded for the first time in the history of tourism from Russia to Turkey.
The Istanbul Statistical Office of the planning agency IBB Istanbul issued a bulletin with the results of last year in the tourism sector of the Turkish metropolis.
The total number of tourists who arrived in Istanbul in 2020 fell to 5 million, which is 66.4% less than in 2019 (for comparison, 5 million 415 thousand tourists arrived in Istanbul in the first 5 months of 2019 alone).
Istanbul lost fewer foreign tourists than Turkey as a whole: the number of foreigners visiting Turkey in 2020 decreased by 72% compared to 2019 figures.
The leading country in foreign tourist flow to Istanbul is the Russian Federation: in 2020, the city was visited by 421,000 Russians (8.42% of the total number of tourists). This happened for the first time in the history of Russian tourism to Turkey (Russian leadership in Antalya is already familiar).
Behind Russia in Istanbul in the TOP 5 entry markets in 2020 are Germany (375 thousand), France (227 thousand), the UK (202 thousand), Iran (174 thousand tourists).
The main role in Russia’s leadership was played by the pandemic and the decline in flows from Europe to Turkey. The number of Russians in Istanbul decreased in absolute terms compared to 2019: in 2020 they arrived by 41.6% less than in 2019.
Russian tour operators TUI Russia, PEGAS Touristik and Coral Travel launched charter programs in Istanbul in 2020. This fact also contributed to the good dynamics of the domestic tourist flow.
