Rossio Station

Description:

Rossio railway station is not just a train station, it is a real monument about which poems and songs are composed. During its 120-year history, the Rossio station, which was the central station of Lisbon for a long time, tied the fates of thousands of people - who met, accompanied and came to their loved ones. The architecture of the building deserves special attention, which made it a true masterpiece.

The building of the Rossio station, designed by Jose Luis Monteiro, was built in 1886-1890, and in order to ensure that the railway tracks running in the direction of the station in the city center did not interfere with the movement of transport, an almost 3-kilometer tunnel was built. The Rossio Tunnel was one of the largest engineering structures of the XIX century in Portugal. Since its opening until 1957, the station was the main city station, but in the second half of the XX century its importance gradually decreased, and now only commuter trains depart from here in the direction of Sintra.

The architecture of the building deserves special attention, which made it a true masterpiece. The facade is made in the neo-Manueline style and is decorated with two arches in the form of horseshoes with a carved inscription, between which there is a sculpture in the form of a knight. In the decoration of the facade, tiles, numerous sculptures, buttresses and other decorative elements are also actively used.
