Murmansk Commercial Seaport

portovy, Murmansk, Murmansk region, Russian Federation

Description:

The history of the Murmansk seaport begins in the years of the First World War. It became the third port in the north-west after the ports of Arkhangelsk and St. Petersburg. After the beginning of hostilities were blocked straits Bosporus and Dardanelles, as well as the port of St. Petersburg, only Arkhangelsk port continued to function. With the beginning of winter, when navigation stopped, it became obvious the need to build a new port in Murmansk. The first steamer was able to dock in it in the autumn of 1915 - it was the steamer Drott, which arrived with cargo from New York.

A few months later, the construction of the railway was completed, and the first trains with cargo went to the Murmansk port. With the outbreak of the Second World War, the seaport of Murmansk began to deliver various cargoes to Spain, in addition, it was here that the ships of the countries participating in the anti-Hitler coalition were unloaded. Workers of the port were engaged in the repair of piers destroyed as a result of air raids, repaired damaged equipment. After the war, the second life of the port began - it was restored, and in 1980 it became one of the five largest ports of the Soviet Union.

In 1994, the port was transformed into an Open Joint Stock Company. Today, it is one of the largest Russian ports, where navigation does not stop even in winter. This is the largest urban enterprise, which is the "locomotive" of the economy. The famous barque Sedov is attributed to the Murmansk port - the world's largest sailboat, as well as the entire nuclear icebreaker fleet of Russia.
