Makarov Embankment

Description:

Makarov embankment runs along the left bank of the Malaya Neva from the Exchange Square to the embankment of the Smolenka River. The original name of the site from the modern Tiflis street to the Cadet line - Gostinaya street - was given by Gostiny Dvor, located on the site of modern houses No. 6 and 8.

On April 16, 1887, it became Tuchkovo Embankment, along the Tuchkov Bridge. Until 1914, the embankment officially began from the Exchange Line, and the previous section still remained unnamed. And on December 15, 1952, it was renamed in honor of the Russian naval commander and scientist Stepan Osipovich Makarov (1848-1904).

Major repairs of Makarov embankment took place in 1958-1966. Then the highway was created almost anew. The project of the embankment was compiled by architects L. A. Noskov, engineers A. D. Gutzeit and B. B. Levin. Simultaneously with these works, two capital bridges were built - instead of wooden Exchange and Tuchkov. The granite wall was raised over the bank of the Neva. Behind the Tuchkov Bridge, instead of port warehouses, a wide boulevard was built, and river piers were created. From here the ships are sent to Kronstadt and Peterhof. Since the 1970s, a mill of flour and confectionery products has been working on the site of house No. 32, now known as the confectionery factory "Nevsky Shores".

The newest building on the embankment of Makarov is the house No30. It is built on the site of the apartment house dismantled in 2002, repeats the features of its predecessor.
