Ancient times and the Middle Ages
The territory of modern Yalta was inhabited in ancient times. Archaeologists find traces of settlements from the III-II millennium BC, including mounds and the remains of fortified settlements.
In the first millennium BC, these lands belonged to the Greek colonies of Taurika and the Black Sea coast. The Greeks called the city a trading and fishing place.
In the Middle Ages, the region was influenced by the Cymerians, Scythians, Alans, Khazars and Genoese. The Genoese used the coast to trade wine, olive oil and grain.
In the XIII-XV centuries, the Crimea and Yalta were part of the Golden Horde and the Crimean Khanate. Local residents were engaged in fishing, agriculture and viticulture.
The era of the Crimean Khanate (XV-XVIII centuries)
Yalta was a small Tatar settlement, mainly a fishing and trading port.
The population was predominantly Tatar and Crimean Tatar, spoke the Crimean Tatar language.
The economy was based on fishing, viticulture, cattle breeding and trade with neighboring settlements.
In the XVIII century, Yalta became an object of Russian interest, especially after the Russo-Turkish wars.
Russian Empire (late XVIII – early XX century)
In 1783, Crimea was annexed to the Russian Empire, and Yalta is gradually turning from a fishing village into a resort.
In the XIX century, the city became a famous resort on the Black Sea.
Here began to build cottages and sanatoriums for the nobility and intelligentsia.
Empress Catherine II and her followers had a special influence, opening the way for the development of the resort infrastructure.
Noble and merchant families built villas and gardens here, including the famous Livadia Palace and dachas, which became cultural centers.
In the late XIX – early XX century, Yalta became a place of rest for writers and artists. Here lived and worked A.P. Chekhov, L.N. Tolstoy and F.M. Dostoevsky.
The city was characterized by a multinational composition: Russians, Tatars, Armenians, Germans and Jews.
Soviet period (1920–1991)
After the Civil War and the establishment of Soviet power, Yalta was included in the Crimean ASSR.
Yalta became one of the centers of Soviet tourism: sanatoriums, children's camps, recreation centers and health resorts were opened.
The Livadia Palace became world famous after the Yalta Conference of 1945, when F. Roosevelt, W. Churchill and J. Stalin met here to discuss the post-war world order.
In the 1960s-1980s, Yalta was popular among Soviet tourists, especially due to the mild climate, the sea and therapeutic resorts.
Modern Yalta (1991–present)
