History of Nha Trang Town

Nha Trang is one of the most famous resort towns in Vietnam, located on the coast of the South China Sea. But its modern popularity is only one chapter in a long, layered history dating back thousands of years.

I. The Oldest Times: Prehistoric Period

Archaeological finds in the area of Nha Trang (especially in the zones of Xóm C,n and Bãi Tiên) indicate that the first settlements here existed 3-4 thousand years ago. They found:

  • stone tools,

  • the remains of primitive dwellings,

  • burial

  • early ceramic products.

These were the ancient Austronesian tribes, the ancestors of the Chams, who would later create one of the most developed states in the region.

The Age of the Kingdom of Champa (II - XVII centuries)

Nha Trang as part of Lam Ap State and later Champa

Since the II century AD, the territory of modern Nha Trang was part of the state of Lam Up, the predecessor of the famous sea power of Champa. For the Chams, these lands were important for two reasons:

  1. The strategic position is a convenient bay for trade and navigation.

  2. Religious significance is the veneration of the goddess Po Nagar.

Po Nagar Towers (VII-XI centuries)

The main historical and spiritual attraction of Nha Trang are the towers of Ponaghar, built by Chams between the VII and XI centuries. The complex was dedicated to:

  • mother goddess Yang Po Nagar (analogue of the Hindu goddess Bhagavati),

  • Protector of the sea, fertility and crafts.

The architecture of the complex reflects the verified style of Cham stonework: bricks were mounted without mortar, stones were rubbed to each other by hand.

Permanent wars with the Vietas and Khmers

From the XIII to the XVII century, the Chams waged continuous wars with the expanding Viet state of Daiviet. Gradually, the Chams lost their lands until the territory around Nha Trang finally came under Viet control in 1653.

III. Transition under the power of the Viets (XVII-XIX centuries).

1653 - the turning point

Dominating over the south of Vietnam, Prince Nguyen Phuc Tan concluded an agreement with the Cham ruler, according to which the lands of modern Khanh Hoa province (where Nha Trang is located) passed under the rule of the Nguyen.

Settlement foundation

On the site of the future of Nha Trang there was only a small fishing village Xóm Bóng, located near the towers of Po Nagar. Gradually new residents moved here:

  • fishermen,

  • salt merchants,

  • Swallow nest pickers.

The name Nha Trang appeared during this period and probably comes from the Cham word "Ea Trang" - "white river".

The period of French colonization (XIX-XX centuries)

After the colonization of Vietnam by France, Nha Trang began to turn into an important administrative and resort center.

Major developments:

1. 1862-1900.

The French noticed the unusual beauty of Nha Trang Bay and its climate. They started:

  • build roads,

  • organize posts,

  • to place military installations.

2. 1891 - The Pasteur Institute

French physician Dr. Alexander Yersen founded the Institut Pasteur, one of the first research bases in Indochina. Yersen became a legend of Nha Trang; here he is buried.

3. Resort development

During the French period, Nha Trang developed as the "little Riviera".

  • Villas were built,

  • promenades,

  • Catholic churches,

  • port.

Twentieth Century: War and Reconstruction

1. Vietnam war

During the war (1955–1975):

  • in Nha Trang was the naval base of South Vietnam and the United States,

  • The city became a center for training special operations forces.

  • There was a large air base complex nearby.

At the same time, due to its geographical location, Nha Trang suffered less destruction than many other Vietnamese cities.

VI. Modern stage: the growth of tourism and becoming a world-class resort (1975–present)

After the unification of Vietnam in 1975, Nha Trang became the administrative center of Khanh Hoa Province. But the main stage of development began in the 1990s, when the country opened to international tourism.

Key stages of growth:

1. 1990-2000s

  • construction of large hotels and resorts;

  • restoration of historical sites;

  • popularization of diving and beach rest.

2. Establishment of island resorts

The islands in Nha Trang Bay have been turned into resorts and entertainment:

  • Hong Che Island (Vinpearl)

  • Hong Moon is a marine reserve.

  • Hong Tam,

  • Hong Lao is the famous “island of monkeys”.

3. Infrastructure breakthrough

There are:

  • Kam Ran International Airport,

  • The cable car to Winperl Island,

  • New highways and embankments.

4. Tourism boom

Nha Trang became:

  • Center for International Festivals,

  • The venue for the Miss Universe competition,

  • One of the most popular resorts in Southeast Asia.

VII. Nha Trang today

By the early 2020s, Nha Trang is:

  • a major tourist center attracting millions of guests;

  • a city with developed infrastructure, skyscrapers and a port;

  • aquaculture center (especially the cultivation of swallow nests for "bird's nest" - an expensive delicacy);

  • region of scientific research centers (Institute of Pasteur, Oceanographic Institute).

At the same time, the balance between the resort atmosphere and the historical heritage is preserved: the Ponagar towers, the Longchon pagoda, the houses of the French era - all this reminds of the rich past of the city.
