Get to know the Russian national painting school in the biggest collection of Russian art from medieval times to present day.The tour of the Tretyakov Gallery, which holds the largest collection of Russian art in the world, will become a fascinating journey into the rather unknown world of Russian painting. The works cover the period of XI to early XX century and include sacred icons, stunning portrait and landscape art, the famous Russian Realists' paintings that culminated in the Wanderers' Group, and splendid creations of Russian Symbolism, impressionism, and art nouveau.
The 20th-century Tretyakov Gallery collection, which sits separate in the modern building in Krymsky val, features renowned modern Russian masterpieces by Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Natalia Goncharova, Social Realists of the 1960s, underground artists of the waning years of the Soviet Union, and artists from the 1990s.
I will meet you at your hotel/ accommodation or other place by request. We will go to the museum by metro/ walking. The tour will be an overview of the Russian school of painting. You will get familiar with the canvases by renowned Russian masters representative of each epoch, genre and trend. You will learn how Russian art commenced and evolved over time.
You are to choose between two 3-hour options:
visit to the Old Tretyakov Gallery which features works from 11th century to early 20th century. Recommended to classical art lovers
or
tour the 20th-century Modern Russian art gathered in Krymsky val. Recommended to avant-guard and modern art lovers.
You may want to do both, so it will be two tours :) The museum branches are located in different parts of Moscow and each one features about 50 000 pieces of art.
