Event potential of Russian regions: top leaders published

The R&C Research Center summed up the results of 2020 - presented the annual top of the event potential of the Russian regions.

2020 was a major challenge for all sectors of the economy, and the tourism and event industries were among the hardest hit by the pandemic.

When calculating the rating, the influence of negative factors was taken into account, indicators were considered:

  1. Infrastructure and logistics;
  2. Programs to promote the region in the domestic and foreign markets;
  3. Policy of development of congress and exhibition potential of the region;
  4. Experience with significant events;
  5. Tourist attractiveness and transport accessibility.

Many regions abandoned plans to build new sites and limited themselves to the renovation of existing ones.

Indicators of Moscow and the Moscow region are not included in the top because of the advanced level of development of the industry. Ufa, Kaliningrad, Krasnoyarsk, Vladivostok showed growth.

The five leaders of the rating changed slightly compared to 2019: St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Kazan and Sochi retained their positions, and Ufa rose to 5th place. The Republic of Bashkortostan did not reduce business activity even in the lockdown - in April, an international online forum "The World After the Coronavirus: A View from the Heart of Eurasia" was held.

In the top three, the gap in the number of points is minimal. Yekaterinburg surpasses the sum of points for the development of infrastructure Kazan and St. Petersburg, but inferior to them in the number of attracted events. Sochi worsened the final score, which exacerbated the gap - it is necessary to revise the development strategy. Ufa can grow by attracting major events.

Kaliningrad is catching up with the leaders, the tourist brand JoinKaliningrad appeared in the city in 2020. Growth showed Yaroslavl, Primorsky Krai, Kemerovo region, Kamchatka, Vladimir region. The upward movement is due to the support and development of the congress and exhibition industry, participation in events that promote promotion in the foreign and domestic markets, efforts to attract events.

Deterioration of the total score is recorded in the Irkutsk (-7) and Rostov (-6) regions. The negative dynamics is due to the lack of regional measures to support the congress and exhibition industry. The Irkutsk region has reduced its presence at tourist events.

In 2020, the foundations of the event industry’s functioning were nullified – it forced to revise the existing ways of organizing interaction, technologies for holding events, and the legislative and regulatory framework. In the regions, different models of countering the spread of coronavirus infection and the working conditions of the event industry have developed.

The general trend is the reduction of funding for the industry and the rejection of promotion-related activities. Capital construction projects of industrial facilities have been frozen. Support for the industry remains significant, with financial support and subsidies remaining in many regions.
