World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) predicts industry recovery after COVID-19 vaccination

Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), said the coronavirus pandemic had caused chaos in the industry: If you are realistic, there is a lot of chaos in the tourism industry. Many countries have their own restrictions, many talk about corridors, but this is unrealistic, because the situation around us changes daily and weekly.”

According to him, UNWTO had one forecast for 2020, and the result was different. “I still think that the vaccination process will significantly accelerate the growth of tourists and, compared to the disastrous results of last year, the summer of 2021 should be much better, but this requires coordination between countries and the establishment of common rules.”

Zurab Pololikashvili noted that there are many countries – big players who should take the initiative and leadership to agree on specific travel rules.

“Overall, I think the work of the UNWTO Crisis Committee will yield concrete results, and we will be able to see the summer in positive numbers and give an optimistic mood to both travelers and people involved in the tourism industry,” he said.

According to the World Tourism Organization, in 2020, the industry lost $1.3 trillion and threatened the loss of approximately 100-120 million jobs. Lost income in 2020 was 11 times greater than in 2009 during the global economic crisis.
