Candy. Favorite delicacy on the imperial table.
Description:
- In the 18th century, Catherine the Great often comes to Smolensk. And in an unexpected way, one of the Smolensk industries - "confect business" - blooms even more. The Empress was treated to fruit sweets, which were the main souvenir of our city, and she liked them very much. As a result, the supply of confects to the court was established - for example, in 1796, 35 boxes were sent to the capital. The Empress believed that confects have a beneficial effect on health.
- These sweets were preferred by Paul I and Alexander I. In 1851 Smolensk confects at the international exhibition in London received a bronze medal for the originality of taste.
And in October 2018, Smolensk sweets won the “bronze” at the All-Russian festival-competition “Tourist Souvenir – 2018”. According to the recipes found in the old cookbook of 1887, the production of Smolensk "dishes of emperors" was revived and again the confects became one of the main souvenirs of our city.
