Gruyer
Description:
Our tour of the picturesque town of milkmen and cheesemakers, located on a hill surrounded by alpine meadows, will begin with a visit to a suburban cheese factory called the Cheese House "Gruyer". We will inspect the production, look at the one-of-a-kind cheese museum and, of course, taste various varieties of it from table savory-salted to dessert caramel-nuts.
After visiting the cheese factory, we have a road to Gruyère, to its majestic medieval castle, which is not inferior in attendance to Chillon. We will enter the medieval village, the houses of which belong to the buildings of the 16-18 centuries, walk along its ancient street, bypassing the stone chapel built in the Gothic style, and go up to the town, which many centuries ago was surrounded by a blank fortress wall and a deep moat.
Gruyères Castle has a rich history. To build fortifications began the leader of the northern tribe of barbarians named Gruerius, who was fascinated by fertile land and meadows with juicy green grass. Later, the castle belonged to several generations of counts of Gruyères until their complete bankruptcy, served as the residence of royal officials of the city-state of Fribourg, as well as the residence and work of a young artist who received this historical structure as a gift from taking and making its restoration. And only then, in the middle of the last century, the castle became a museum, which we will definitely visit. During the tour of the castle you will learn the history of these places and beautiful legends, as well as admire the restoration works of the former owner of this castle and his creative friends.
After visiting the Gruyères Castle, we will go to the Giger Café, which is located next to the museum of the same name. Hans Rudolf Giger is a contemporary artist working in the style of fantastic realism. His work can be admired or outraged, but it is simply impossible to remain indifferent at the sight of his paintings. The walls and furniture of the cafe are quite in its style, you will decide for yourself whether you should visit its museum or not.
On the way back from Gruyère, we can go to one of the many restaurants located in the village at its foot, where we will treat ourselves to fondue, rakletta or other dishes of national cuisine. I recommend you be sure to order fresh berries for dessert with the famous Gruyère double-cream, which has no analogue anywhere in the world.
From Gruyer we will go to the neighboring town of Brock, where there is a large chocolate factory, which for the first time in the world began to produce milk chocolate. At the factory, we will watch a theatrical performance dedicated to the history of milk chocolate and the development of its production process. Then we will go for a tasting, after which you will have the opportunity to purchase this sweet product as a gift to your family and friends.
With this, our tour will be over, and we will go back, exchanging impressions along the way and considering the photos taken.
